Explain It To Me As If I Know Nothing
There are many paths to the same destination. Learn all that you can.
I spend a good deal of time explaining things. Showing traders how to use features of the TT platform. Teaching them. I’ve found that the best way to grasp what they're struggling with is to start at the lowest level we can reach. Have them explain the TT platform, the widget they’re using and/or the problem they’re having as if I don’t know a thing about the platform. I play ignorant.
Einstein said “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t know it well enough.” and I’m a firm believer in that. You’ll learn magnitudes more about a person’s struggle if you ask them to explain where they’re going rather than how they got there, but it’s important to know that you're both in the same ballpark. For that matter, it’s important to know they can get themself to the ballpark.
If you’re trying to master a double-back layout dismount off a balance beam yet you’ve yet to master striding the length of a beam, your problem lies far before what you’re attempting.
If you want an algo that will only enter buy orders when the market is above a certain moving average, you better be able to calculate that moving average or simply enter a buy order.
Learn from the bottom and your knowledge will have endless boundaries. Learn from the top and you’re likely just replicating the bias of others.
